But Americans must be honest about the legacy of racism and white supremacy if we are to create the conditions for a lasting, multiracial democracy.

Dr. Peter Jauhiainen is a professor of religious studies at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who specializes in American religious history. He received his Ph.D from the University of Iowa, and an M.Div from Princeton Theological Seminary.
