“Reading Backwards: Israel’s Story as Scripture for the Church?”
What do we mean when we say that Israel’s story is Scripture for us? How did the New Testament authors interpret the testimony of Israel’s Scriptures? Did the Old Testament somehow actually predict the coming of Jesus? Or were the New Testament writers illegitimately plucking prooftexts out of their proper historical context? In this class, we will look at a few texts that demonstrate how the New Testament authors actually read the Old Testament. And we will consider what difference their example makes for us.
