Same Sex Marriage
Donovan introduced a time of discernment by sharing some background of General Assembly’s approval for pastors to perform same sex weddings, the Supreme Court’s ruling in June which made same sex marriage legal in all states including Tennessee and a sampling of responses of other churches including First Church Nashville and a Baptist Church. Session members expressed a range of concerns and considerations, including the capital campaign, congregational unity, an acknowledgement of diversity of opinion within the congregation and the desire to love and respect all of our brothers and sisters in Christ. September 20 was identified as a time the session would be available in the fellowship hall during the Sunday school hour to share their experiences and reflections with the congregation.

THERE WAS A MOTION AND SECOND TO APPROVE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: “WHILE WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IS A DIVERSE CONGREGATION THAT IS NOT UNITED ON ANY ONE ISSUE, WE SEEK TO BE UNITED ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THE CHURCH. AS OUR LORD WELCOMES ALL TO HIS TABLE, WE SEEK TO WELCOME ALL IN OUR WORSHIP, BAPTISM, COMMUNION, MARRIAGE, FELLOWSHIP, TEACHING, AND OTHER EXPRESSIONS OF THE FAITH FOUND IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE WELCOME ALL PEOPLE WHO SEEK TO JOIN US ON OUR JOURNEY TO SERVE OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” SESSION APPROVAL WAS UNANIMOUS.
